Turkish Charter

During the summer of 2012, Anam Cara will be based in Fethiye Marina on the Lycian Coast of Turkey. Fethiye Marina is ideally placed close to the centre of the town, convenient for the shops, restaurants and markets and just a 1 hour taxi ride from the Dalaman International airport.

Fethiye is a convivial place with warm and friendly locals. The market is a fascinating warren of shops and stalls, selling things, fixing things and making things of all descriptions. The fish restaurant in the fish market is a particular favourite, it is normal to select your fish from the market and take it to the restaurant to be prepared to your  favourite recipe.

In the cliffs behind the town are several Lycian rock tombs that are prominent when approaching from seaward. This necropolis is virtually all that remains of ancient Telmessus, which was the principal port of Lycia.

Most of Fethiye was devastated by an earthquake in 1958, so that most of the buildings date from reconstruction after that time. Here and there one sees older dwellings that survived the earthquake - little gems tucked into the otherwise principally concrete town.

From the sailing point of view, Fethiye could not be better positioned. The bay of Fethiye is sheltered from the prevailing North Easterly winds and usually allows easy sailing in flat water. Ideal for newcomers to sailing to get familiar with the boat. The Meltemi wind occasionally blows strongly here, but seldom more than Force 6 which Anam Cara handles with ease!

The beautiful Skopea Limani is an easy sail across the bay of Fethiye and this small, much indented gulf, protected by a chain of islands on its Eastern side provides numerous attractive anchorages in what is almost a primeval landscape. Vast reddish cliffs, pockmarked with caves and ravines, divide steep slopes thickly wooded with pine. The water is very clear where it is shallow enough to see the bottom. Most of the gulf is very deep, with the bottom dropping off quickly.
