Frequently asked questions

About Turkey

  • What is the weather like?

The weather around the Bay of Fethiye is generally warm after the rainy season ends at about the end of March. There may be a few showers in April and September but between these months, the weather is warm, peaking in August when temperatures can get to the high 30 degrees C. October can be beautiful but can have occasional showers. Storms are not unknown from the middle of October onwards.

  • What is the wind like?

The wind normally comes up during the late morning, can increase to 15 to 20 knots and then disappear in the evening, ideal conditions for a sailing holiday! From July, the Meltemi can come up for a day or two but rarely reaches more than force 6. Anam Cara revels in such conditions.

  • Are there any mosquitos or other insects?

Some of the bays that we visit do have mosquitoes etc. so please do bring insect repellant with you from home.

  • What is the local currency?

The local currency is the Turkish Lira (YTL). You are best to bring about £50.00 worth of Lira and then top it up as required from the many cash points around the towns. Traveler’s cheques are not really recommended as you will spend ages queuing at the banks to change them.

  • What are the visa requirements?

British passport holders can get a visa valid for 90 days at the airport, it costs 10 pounds and the immigration official likes to have a ten pound note. Visit the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs web site for further information.

  • Do we need vaccinations?

According to the World Health Organisation, there are no requirements for vaccination for any international traveler to Turkey.

General questions

  • Are we likely to be seasick?

We do not often get guests becoming seasick because we try to select flat water for our sailing, particularly at the beginning of the holiday. If you know you are prone to motion sickness you should bring some medication such as Stugeron for your own peace of mind.

  • What insurance do we need?

Anam Cara is fully covered by Pantaenius Insurance including Commercial Charter cover.

You must ensure that each person in your party has adequate personal insurance including holiday insurance cover.

  • What is the cruising range?

We can cruise Turkish coastal waters and some Greek Islands, but not much more than 100 miles from our base in Fethiye depending on the length of the charter.

  • Where can we start & finish our Cruise?

Our normal start & finish base is the Ece Saray Marina in Fethiye where we can be found on berth D31. You may choose to start or finish your cruise at other suitable places on the Turkish coast or in the Greek Islands. A relocation fee and mooring fee will be charged for this service depending on the distance from our normal base.

  • Do we need any special clothing?

During the high season, the weather is warm both day and night, you shouldn’t need more than a light jumper or jacket. At either end of the season, it is still warm during the day, but cooler at night. Long trousers and a fleece is recommended for the evenings. Specialist sailing clothing is not normally needed.

  • What additional items do we need to bring?

As well as your personal clothing and washing items, please bring
